Town Creek 2025

The Fort Bedford Chapter of Trout Unlimited (FBTU) completed the Town Creek Streambank Stabilization & Habitat Project in August 2025.  The project was conducted under a PA Department of Environmental Protection GP-1 General Permit authorization issued in November 2024.  The project used a design provided by National Trout Unlimited.

Two stream segments totaling approximately 1030 feet were addressed due to high, vertical eroding banks. Town Creek is a high quality-coldwater fishery (HQ-CWF), in Southampton Township of Bedford County.

Construction began in July 2025.  Volunteers from FBTU and a contracted equipment operator, with technical assistance from Bedford County Conservation District staff, installed PA Fish & Boat Commission approved fish habitat enhancement structures, reinforced the bank toe, and reshaped banks to stable 2:1 to 3:1 slopes with the purpose of reducing streambank erosion and reconnecting the stream channel to the floodplain, while improving aquatic habitat. Live stakes were planted in late October.  The project was funded with Bedford Countywide Action Plan Implementation Funds.

Shobers Run 2021 - 2024

The Fort Bedford Chapter of Trout Unlimited (FBTU) completed the Shobers Run Streambank Stabilization & Habitat Project in November 2024. The project was multi-phased. Planning began in 2019, with construction in 2021, 2023, and 2024.  The project was conducted under a PA Department of Environmental Protection GP-1 General Permit authorization issued in July 2021.  The project design was done by Bedford County Conservation District Staff.

Approximately 1600 feet of stream was addressed due to high, vertical eroding banks and over-widened channels. Shobers Run is a high quality-coldwater fishery (HQ-CWF), in Bedford Township and Bedford Borough of Bedford County.  The work was done on Bedford Area School District Property.  The project section of the stream is used for educational programs within the school district and is special regulation youth fishing only for a portion of the year.

Volunteers from FBTU and a contracted equipment operator, with technical assistance from Bedford County Conservation District staff, installed PA Fish & Boat Commission approved fish habitat enhancement structures, with the purpose of reducing streambank erosion and centralizing the stream channel to increase depth and oxygen in the water, while improving aquatic habitat.  The project was funded by Trout Unlimited’s Embrace A Stream Grant and Bedford Countywide Action Plan Implementation Funds.

Beaver Creek 2022

The Fort Bedford Chapter of Trout Unlimited (FBTU) completed the Beaver Creek Sediment Reduction & Habitat Project in August 2025.  The project was conducted under a PA Department of Environmental Protection GP-1 General Permit authorization issued in August 2021.  The project used a design provided by National Trout Unlimited.

The project impacted approximately 1300 linear feet or eroding streambanks and excess siltation in the stream bottom. Beaver Creek is a high quality-coldwater fishery (HQ-CWF), in South Woodbury Township of Bedford County.

Riparian trees and shrubs were planted by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in the Spring of 2023.  The project was funded by Bedford Countywide Action Plan Implementation Funds.
